A mixture of delicious fruits (slightly tropical) and Mon Cherie. 81-85 – Wow, really good one

87P is for the Italian Import Gradi 43%
a really great whisky! Quite different from today's Bowmore practically no smoke, only the "dirt" from the sea and the watt incredibly sweet and fruity elegant yet expressive, always mild I would not have blinded him to Islay, more to the coast of the mainland with just one word: Wow!
I prefer the Bowmore De Luxe over this one because it's a bit oilier and smoother.
whiskyfun: Bowmore 12 yo (43%, Dumpy Golden Label, 1970’s) Nose: very briny, sea air, tropical fruit, lots of flowery notes and lots of peat. How great! And no ‘perfumy’ notes at all! Mouth: sweet, ‘good’ caramel, café latte, peat, milk chocolate. Very ‘slippery’, says Davin, and he adds: “This whisky was made by somebody who wasn’t only in it for the money’, whatever that means. The finish is medium long, very fresh and clean. Wow, it’s soooo much better than the current 12yo! Besides, it kept perfectly, which might be thanks to its plastic stopper. Plastic, better than cork or metal? Mmmm… Anyway, 90 points for this old Bowmore (Davin 92, Olivier 94).
Unfortunately too diluted. With a little patience, a fine distillate can be recognized, paired with a wood whose delicacy can hardly be found today. Much softer than oak. How I would love to try this one at 48%.

The first thought was: someone is trying to tease me, because it smells so intensely of salty-dry manzanilla, fino or oloroso sherry and has an aroma profile that I had never known before. The previous Bowmores that I had from the 60s or 70s were light fruity tropical. Fortunately, I then read the various notes of all Bowmore Dumpy Brown Gold Labels and realized that this profile was probably more common at the time. I then tried to discover this aroma profile and save it as a 60s, 70s profile. With a 2cl sample it's hard to rate in a situation like this, but I think it boils down to 89-90 points.
I was wrong giving it 88 in the first place. It’s clearly more.

A very old-school Bowmore with great value for what it is. The profile is really nice, but the finish drops off a bit too quickly, otherwise it would score higher.

Classic old-style Bowmore. Gentle sea breeze, seaweed and light ash with very soft peat. Salted fruit, pineapple, passion fruit, citrus and a touch of honey. |

Almost no alcohol bite. Very old-school and elegant with smoke, sea salt and fruit sweetness. Orange juice, honey, rock sugar, old wood furniture and warm embers with a light woody tone. Despite being 43%, it doesn’t feel thin. |

Oily and fruity with a very oily mouthfeel and a soft fruity aromatic profile, not penalised by the alcohol content An excellent example of old-fashioned malt. I could only detect a faint hint of smoke.
An interesting example. While the aroma is perfumed, it's pleasantly intertwined with taffy notes that aren't overly prominent, resulting in a rather pleasant balance. The flavor is flatter and more uniform: melon, yellow plum, ripe green grapes, and a light honey note. The finish is warming but a bit too short, reaching no more than 40% in my experience.

I have tasted a few of these and they are high quality, this one is more fruity than peaty.

great accessible old bowmore no soapy,no perfumy
There is no peated feeling, lots of tropical fruits with a hint of sea salt. Bowmore is still as good as always.
I confirm Corbusos taste, a superb bowmore, peaty, with a delicious tropical fruitiness.
Definitely needs some time to open. Don't add any water ! It will drop down flat immediately. The whole whisky is watery on the palate from the very start. For those of you who tried only a sample of this or a single bottle, i tried whisky from 3 bottles and there is somewhat a significant diffrence of the whole whisky bottled inside those bottles... I rated first one with 85p due to being peaty and less fruity, also lighter in color, however second 2 bottlings were significantly darker in color and had a more fruity taste. 88p for those. All 3 bottlings were a bit watery on the palate though... No matter what however, It's definitely a must try for all Bowmore fans.
"old" bowmore: exotic sweetness on the palate: it is very fruity, very colorful, the spices are barely present. the fine smoke, a little salt, a little grass on the violet on the palate, a little disappointment, it's a little watery, the fruits yield a bit of ground, there are woods, herbs again and the smoke barely noticeable the finish is simple and basic considering the excellent nose.
it seems that you can catch something, but the general impression suggests that my sample from a bottle with not the best preservation, unfortunately. There is no point in giving grades
Very, very old-school. Lamp oil on the nose, very oily mouthfeel, and a great, soft, old-school flavor profile. A prime example of a malt from times gone by. I could only detect a faint hint of smoke.

Difficult to compare with current expressions of Bowmore. This is much more complex. Not much peat and coastal influences, but more herbal and floral. Special and very enjoyable.
Nice to try something old. But he will not be my favorite. As a grade, there's an average of 3.
sample. Nice subtle peat. Might not be peaty enough for the die hard peat zealots, but for me this is just about right.

Tasting freshly opened bottle. I wouldn't have recognized it as Bowmore if I were blind. But still very good stuff. Sweet, salty, fruity and intense. Virtually no smoke. Nothing is burning. Gentle older gentleman of a whisky. More detailed notes in a few weeks when he breathed something.
Balance? Considering a spoiled nose? I don’t know ... no evaluation ... what a bad luck ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? In the meantime, there is no need to know about it. ”
Various and complex tropical fruits and spices, oily body, peat and smoke different from these days or morrison bowmore, high perfection, and the characteristics of well-made peat whisky (the peat swirls in the aftertaste)
[November 2022] I donated a bottle to a community charity tasting "Islay before the boom - drams of the last century". There are several different batches of this Bowmore out there, so the sometimes-contradictory tasting notes here are easy to explain... ...and my batch offers a trademark old-style profile which does not exist anymore since decades, and which is very unusual to modern drinkers. The nose offers a lot of farmyard and other old-style aromas which are confusing to many connoisseurs, while both taste and finish are completely different with a very interesting combination of trademark Islay flavours. Beside the Bowmore fruitiness this dram reminds me in some characteristics of an old Laphroaig of the sixties, other characteristics I rather attribute to an early seventies Ardbeg. Very, very interesting stuff and extremely quaffable without questions.

The colour is old gold, and the nose is quite unusual to be honest. It offers many farmyard aromas (cowshed, old machinery, resin) which were quite common in the 60iers and early seventies of the last century (how many people know farmyard smells these days?). Beside this there are many other unusual old-style aromas like waxes, hessian, old engine oils, soot and lots of Fino sherry notes. There is significant peat too, and after a long breathing some dried fruits dare to show up. This is a very, very old-style nose and very, very unusual to modern drinkers. I like it, but a lot of other participants were somewhat confused and rather turned it down. |

The taste is completely different, and all participants of the charity tasting confirmed this (and most were confused about this fact too). It is very fruity as one would expect from a Bowmore of this time (distilled in the late sixties) with both significant peaty and Fino sherry flavours which combine to an adorable profile. Wow, this is excellent (and everyone in the room confirms this). Chew it for some time and additional flavours will join in like maritime impressions (shells, kippers), spices (camphor), coffee and some air-dried meat. It is almost unbelievable that a 12-years old can develop such a complex and balanced profile, but I am very sure they added much older casks to this batch and the mysterious bottle maturation added another fair share over the more than 40 years in the bottle. Dangerously quaffable. |

The dram arrives warming and with a coating mouthfeel on my palate without distracting moments. The finish is long and adds some medicinal notes (surprisingly, e.g., bandages, ointments) and more herbal impressions. It vanishes in slowly fading waves and leaves a delicious note of Manzanilla sherry towards the end (I adore Manzanilla sherry). Again, there are no distracting moments until the very end. Water is not needed but does no harm either. |
A Bowmore distilled in 1968 or earlier, I'm really excited about that. He's practically as old as me. I have heard a lot of good things about Bowmore from the 1960s.

A superb nose, at a level that can't be met in the palate, and to a lesser extent the finish. Nevertheless it it a classical Bowmore from the '70s (distillate), which is a sign of quality.
Great nose with impressions of grain, a hint of passion fruit, vanilla and apricots. I would have guessed neither Bowmore nor Islay here .. Unfortunately, the mouth and finish become a bit flatter, the wood fire ash comes late

A beautiful old Bowmore with a gentle but still captivating nose (time in the glass does it good) and a great and full experience on the palate - it already has slight OBF nuances. The finish is comparatively short, but that is not my concern. The 43% works wonderfully here, without you secretly catching yourself wishing for a higher bottling strength. Fortunately, I did not find any soapy notes or even a violet scent in this bottling. A really great piece!

A very nice nose with delicate, maritime-like smoke, interwoven with beautiful sour fruit notes, especially the Bowmore-typical passion fruit. Very distant campfire by the sea, salty breeze, a hint of seaweed, vanilla, grilled passion fruit, tobacco, caramel, leather armchair in the old gentleman's study, a hint of dried pineapple, peach, mineral water, fresh hazelnuts, sandalwood, linen cloth, fine oak spice. |

A very classic Bowmore bottle. As it should be a 1980s bottled whisky, I expect the date of distillation should be in 1970s or even before. However, it interestingly gives a lot of soapy/perfume notes, which refreshes my cognition towards Bowmore. Overall, the nosing is pretty elegant with the notes of floral and fruits. Quite soft in mouth, while the power of the peat is still exiting. I guess this is also an important bottle to be tried as a Bowmore fan, for more than once. 89.

http://www.weinkenner.de/2014/bowmore-raritaeten-aus-einer-zeit-als-fernsehen-schwarz-weiss-war-31725/ Color: gold Nose: Very pleasant - sweet marzipan notes in conjunction with a herbal parade, Maggiwürze, cowshed and wet sheepskin. Freshly staked peat and a lot of smoke. Maritime with underlaid nut flavors. Taste: Somewhat thin consistency, only slightly spicy, again cowshed, old leather saddle, attic and old furniture. In addition, there are very salty herbs, some wood and a fine honey sweetness. Finish: Relatively short - smoky-salty-dry! Dried herbs and dusty loft. Comment: The nose reminds a bit of the old blends of White Horse from the fifties! 90 points (nose: 91 / taste: 90 / finish: 88)
