Advise from my friends: if you go Glenrothes, go IB and stay away from the standard core range. I followed up that advise and poured this great dram some 30 minutes ago.

I like the maltmans. Almost always have good bottlings with depth in the nose due to strong barrels. N - The alcohol tickles the first nose, but a fine bouquet of juicy cherries, plums with vanilla, butter and creamy caramel quickly emerges, which gradually turns into nougat. There are also some fine wood aromas and flattering nut aromas in the background. The aroma is a blast. Fun to smell M - sweet start, oily, creamy, fruity... the cherries can be felt again and nestle comfortably before some bite of alcohol and winter spices is added. The barrel takes over at the back and brings a spicy mixture with fading bitterness, some herbs. A really good dram to watch for a long time.

Great mix between coffee notes, sherry, herbs and a slight bitterness. Even the typical Glenrothes note is still slightly present. Large bottle is opened for a more detailed review!

he is too sweet for me because there is too much of the PX therefore he is not for me

Yes this is sherried and sweet. PX sweetness is balanced. Lots of grapes, berries and somewhat old leather. Chocolate praline with hazelnut and almonds. No off notes. Very long warming finish with a tiny tiny bit of tannine bitterness.

Ten years of aging in PX casks have given the Glenrothes a wonderfully dark color, which suggests an active barrel. At 53.9%, the Glenrothes has an optimal alcohol content for me, which allows a little play with water without any problems. Wonderful, deep sherry notes flow from the glass with ripe cherries, preserved strawberries, plum jam, raisins, dates, figs and a strong sweetness. These rather heavy fruit flavors are complemented by sour cherries, juice oranges, a little bit of apricot jam and a splash of lemon juice. This fruit combination is beguiling! The fruitiness is combined with a spiciness and aromas of pralines with kirsch filling and nut chocolate. The chocolate is more in the whole milk range and not in the dark chocolate range. So on the nose I like the whisky incredibly well. Hats off! The whisky rolls vigorously over the tongue and takes up the entire mouth. A bit of pepper with a slight ginger spiciness can also be felt on the tongue, the fruits and the heavy sweetness are very dominant and offer the perfect partner for the spicier notes. The chocolate is now a little darker and merges into the bitter area and reminds a little of Mon Cherie, tannins from the barrel become noticeable with hints of leather and tobacco. The whisky is strong but very easy to drink neat. With the second sip, the pepperiness and tannins become more intense, but the sweetness and fruitiness ensure that the tart notes receive a suitable counterbalance. Intense, powerful, full-bodied ... just great! The tobacco and leather notes are a little too edgy, a slight alcohol note comes through after a few sips, the sweetness is in a range where I would almost speak of “too much of a good thing”. The finish is medium to long with dominant tannins such as leather, tobacco, old wood, slightly wet forest floor, liquorice, the dark chocolate has turned into chocolate-covered coffee beans. These notes are accompanied by a reverberation of dark fruits and heavy sweetness. And that makes the finish very pleasant. I like it very much when the tart notes are complemented by heavy fruit notes and sweetness. Overall, I have to say that I think the whisky is really good! Those who like intense sherry malts will be satisfied here. He is a little stormy and not a fan of fine taste nuances, because what he does, he does with strength. You have to like that, this Glenrothes is definitely not a gentleman. I gave 88/100 points and for the price of 100 € a buy recommendation for sherry barrel lovers who love intense aromas.

It's pretty good. The PX leaves clear traces, of course, but still halfway frame. But it inevitably cannot keep up with older dark Glenrothes (e.g. the many 1997s). In addition, he lacks the depth and somehow also the Rothes character.
