The batches of the Cask Strength Edition from Glenallachie are released in spring and autumn. They are always dark, strong whiskys whose relatively young age of 10 years is concealed by an intense finish. Here Billy Walker can put his expertise to use and mature and upgrade the acquired stocks with active barrels. One day they will run out. Let's see what happens to Glenallachie. But now it's good to be able to taste bottlings like this Glenallachie, bottled in spring 2022, which was finished in PX, Oloroso, Rioja and Virgin Oak. glen-efze.de

Although not an old whisky, complex flavors are still present. In this respect the price is justified. Typically Glenallachie – distinctive malt and pleasant sherry influences. The batches are not terribly different. They leave you with an overall satisfied connoisseur.

I love Glen Allachie, a whisky with great characteristics, plus a great special offer, and my whisky cabinet is now three bottles richer with GA 10. It's a shame, this is the first GA I haven't particularly liked. Even neat, it's not a winner; it has a sharp alcohol smell and a not particularly balanced taste. 87 points overall? I really don't understand.

Very interesting that the previous batch ran out of stock here almost instantly and from this batch there are still a lot of bottles around. Maybe it got more expensive? People didn't have a good experience with the previous batch? I don't know. But I bought this bottle back in May and had a few drams since then. Maybe 4dl is left in the bottle. The liquid developed very interestingly over time. Let's get into it. N: The nose was very sherry forward and fresh after the first dram when I opened it. With time in the bottle (5 months) it got way better. Fresh fruits are still there but way less forward. Green apples, juicy ripe pears and fresh berries from the forest. The Rioja wine starts to dominate the nose for me. Very nice grape notes, dark berries then the sherry comes out. Figs, plums, raisins and dark caramelized oranges. Some spices like ginger, cloves and a hint of cinnamon. Chocolate and almonds. Some mocha. P: I will share the palate that I got recently. Fresh fruits here are gone. It's quite oily and full. Due to the high abv. it's very mouth-warming and strong. Dark berries, plums, raisins, figs and oranges. Cloves and allspice. Grape and wine. Almonds dipped in dark chocolate with some cinnamon. F: Long and extraordinary. Full of dark fruits and chocolate with mocha. My score will be very high of this. I like it. It's good. But you have to give it time in the bottle to open up and let it transform into this lovely thing. If I had to rate right out of the bottle it would be probably 5-6 points lower. I would recommend this bottle if you can pick it up.
Definitely needs water to make it pleasantly drinkable. But I'll stick to it: Glenallachie just isn't for me.

85.5 The different finishes are clearly in the foreground - a colorful soup of sweet and spicy sherry, oak and plum jam. However, the perceptible alcohol is covered by the sherry notes in the foreground. With more time it becomes round and sticky, sweet and sherry-heavy. With a lot of water then rather spicy-sweet. |

Short, but also intense due to the severity. Clearly alcoholic in the throat. |
The oak spices and tannins are just a bit too much at this point. They've always been part of the GlenAllachie 10 Years Cask Strength, but might've become a little too dominant in Batch 7.
I compared this vs my batch 5 that I have open - seems like the nose on this one is a bit darker as in more chocolate and coffee forward, while the other batch seems more on the red fruit side of things. The taste also has more of those type of flavours, and it doesn't taste have that older taste which I really liked in B5. Still, this is a well made and well matured whisky if you like this style. Seeing as the overall quality of A'Bunadh has gone down and the price has gone up, this is a good replacement if you fancy a clean cask strength sherry bomb. Plus it has a 10 year age statement, which should be applauded almost in this day & age.

Significantly more alcoholic than, for example, batch 6 (despite the lower alcohol content compared to the others). A certain smell of pencil or graphite appears in the aroma. Otherwise, a nice, dense, fruity, chocolate whisky with a quite dry finish, probably a more pronounced influence of the barrels.
Opened about a year ago, enjoyed about 4 ounces, and bottle has been sitting close to shoulder level. Revisiting .. Solid 88 points. I'm enjoying this more than the 15 year which I found quite boring and subdued, and more of a one hit wonder. This 10 year expression at cask strength has so many more layers. 1oz pour with 1/2 Tsp water bringing the ABV down to approximately a perfect 48-50%. Rested in the glass approximately 20 minutes. Room temperature ~73 degrees F, warming glass with hands to about 75-78 degrees F so the oils wake up... And they do. The nose is borderline sickly honey floral perfumed berry sweetness with a hint of oak. Slightly sour note. Almost a fizzy Dr. Pepper or cherry cola note. Sweet Tarts candy. Sip, oily, viscous, honey sweet, red berries, vanilla, baking spices, hint of bitter chocolate and coffee, oak char, so much more fun interesting and lively vs the 15. Finish, tingly bitter oak, sweet baking spices, coffee, hint of dark chocolate pudding or chocolate mousse with coffee liqueur Overall very enjoyable. If I already didn't have a 2nd bottle stocked I'd definitely buy this over the 15 year. No contest. Yeah long after sipping there's this residual lingering bitter sweet chocolate/mocha latte oily coating all over the palate. So freaking good. Fine, 89 points it is. That finish, man.... 15 year old is meh. I'm giving away the 15 year bottle with about 4 oz left for a family member to enjoy. That far down the bottle and the 15 gets really boring quickly.

Glenallachie 10yo Cask Strength Batch 7, 56.8%. Approx 35ml sample thanks to Paul. Very dark amber – almost brown in normal light and a dark orange when held to artificial light. Aroma is coffee syrup, muted with mint and coffee bean. Very closed. Body is moderately oily to full. Taste is quite closed and pointed. It’s the singularity before the big bang. Potential for coffee, raisin and floral flavours, potential for salt and wood, but all of those things are actually coming through very little. Alcohol and a syrupy flavour intensity that offers little complexity. Not hot at all, but bottled at too high an abv for the spirit. 3.35/80 With one pipette drop of water. The aroma is still closed. The palate is a little more red fruit. Spicier too – clove. Has opened up a little. 3.4 Watered to about 52% spicier still. Now more woody. Perfectly okay stuff. Enjoyable enough. 3.425/82
Fruity and a lot of spices. Finish a bit weaker, but still good. I would buy a bottle of this Glenallachie.

Brief notes from an online blind tasting...
The cask strength release certainly helps with the boldness of flavors and a better dram overall compared to the standard Glenallachie 12 Year and 15 Year Old bottlings. But it still feels too young, and mainly a dram that has a weak core distillate completely buried and lost by the PX and Oloroso Sherry cask finish. It's just not very interesting.

Medium length finish. Much better than the Cask Strength Batch 5 released a couple years earlier. Still, you get primarily ginger and an ABV burn on the finish, some more raisins and plums. It's clear this 10 Year Old is still not as complex you'd hope it to be. It still tastes like a weak core buried by the strong Sherry Cask Finish. |
Nice, powerful, berry-fruity.
The notes of dark chocolate, raisins, heather honey, butter scotch and more go hand in hand to hand for a complex and balanced taste
The alcohol is clearly noticeable in the nose at the beginning. If you give the whisky time, the nose relaxes and the remaining aromas emerge. The alcohol is also present in the taste at the beginning. Then it becomes nice and sweet and a dark cherry is added. The finish is full-bodied and the oak dries the mouth a little. The addition of water makes the whisky much smoother and fruitier. I can smell a nice apricot. The taste suffers from the water, however, as the powerful start has taken on many of the aromas. Great bottling from Glenallachie and my first at cask strength. You can certainly play around with water a little, but don't overdo it.

Heavily laden with finishes and the different cask types, but the result is quite harmonious—especially on the nose. A young, floral and fruity Speyside whisky that nevertheless manages to draw "old," woody, and savory notes from the casks. On the palate, it initially seemed too wine-like to me, or rather, too "artificially" flavored, but I must admit that the 10cl sample captivated me more than I had expected over several days. The overall impression remains somewhat of a simulacrum sherry malt due to all the cask magic, but the end result is: simply fantastic.
нос 88 · вкус 86 · финиш 86
Give the malt enough time for air contact. Sherry through and through. You can linger with the aroma/nosing for a long time as it continues to develop and unfold with air. The taste is then much spicier, not as sweet. Becoming drier, typical sherry aromas. For me, the Rioja is completely lost in the sherry... but it doesn't matter; this is a very good malt. If you like sherry-heavy malts, you won't go wrong here; It doesn't necessarily need water (makes it a bit sweeter), but plenty of time for air contact so that the aromas can unfold for the nosing. [91 - 87 = extremely tasty -> it's best to get a second bottle]

(acacia) honey, caramel, fudge, nougat; Vanilla is more in the background. Given enough time, I find dark chocolate with a mocha flavor. nutmeg and cinnamon. The nutty aroma jumps to the fore again and again, is then brought back by the heavy fruit aromas - it's a constant interplay. With even more time, it also gets a sweet floral touch. The alcohol is quite well integrated. |

Very nice/clear notes of rum soaked raisins, brown sugar, and cherries (the sour ones) in the nose and on the palate as well. Toffee and caramel are also present. There is no bitterness and no detectable sulphur. On the flip side, this is a hell of a spicy/sharp dram - with loads of percievable black pepper and ginger. It does not disappear even after adding some water. The previous batches were simply more to my liking. I guess, the issue here for me is that the batch 7 has a higher portion of virgin oak than the previous batches had. I am not a huge fan of virgin oak, unfortunately... Wood, menthol, ACE juice incl. carrot, sweet musty. Just too much of everything and a little sticky to the malt. You can still find your moments of pleasure, but what is mainly lacking is elegance.

Powerful, typical CS Allachie. Reminds me a little of various cigar malts. In my opinion it can be enjoyed without water.

Another beautiful whisky from billy walker
First impressions are not great on this one (not awful either). But 90 euros, hmmm... what a rip-off... Tamdhu 12 is miles ahead of this and it is considerably cheaper. Cask strength integrity malts do not equal higher quality, but I guess they are appealing to the "whisky nerd". Well, I could not care less. -1 for the price. Edit: I tried it today with a bunch of ice, and this remained very pungent; nonetheless, it never improved.

Bahhh, limbo mode for this one. Boring/one-note, hot and flat, cask cask cask, and not great casks at that. Gets a bit better with water but not much. Subdued in its variety, very acidic and alcoholic even after dilution, veeeeery nippy. Typical sour over-sherried modern whisky, with the common dark fuits (and flat in this aspect) --- acidic skins of plums, blueberries, blackberries, etc etc. Leathery-dusty, bready-nutty. Some indistinguishable spiciness, some honey. That is it: not bad-bad, but not good either, and certainly not deserving of the 90 euros I paid for it. Nosing is my favorite part of the whisky experience, and this one certainly delivers something akin to a budget single malt experience (I would honestly prefer to nose a supermarket Tamnavulin over this). |

Much better on the palate, especially reduced to about 50%. Good mouthfeel, and there is actually a decent malt hiding somewhere underneath these overpowering spicy casks. Honestly, what a relief, the spirit is in fact competent, had it not been engineered this way to provide an "intense" dark wine cask experience. I usually do not approve of virgin oak, but I think it is what is holding this one off from being an all around scam (considering the price). Malty, spicy, that Glenallachie minerality, the fruitiness is more diverse here with balanced sirupy-sweet and sour flavours. A bit leathery and dusty from all the wine casks, but overall pleasant in contrast with the pronounced and diverse sweetness (honey, malt, red fruits). Still some alcohol nip, though bearable. I like it, but not too much, especially considering the palate colapses quickly after dilution, becoming too dusty after 30 minutes in the glass. |

Medium to medium-long, once again it is clear that the spirit is of decent quality, but the overall feel is almost that of a sherry bomb (not my style). Creamy christmas spices, malt, coffee chocolate, raisins, dried herbs, vanilla. Pleasant during the current winter season, but not very diverse or memorable. It seems a lot of distilleries are trying to be Edradour and missing the target, while sometimes being more expensive. |

Lovely whisky. They sure know what they're doing at GlenAllachies. Great oily dram with a lot of bittersweets and spices. A lot of evolution and complexity but a bit less balanced compared to batch 5 or 6 (never had the opportunity to taste older batches).

An aromatic dark nose with sugary and winey elements- a combination of orange geste with brown sugar and wet chewing tobacco. Hidden hint of toffee, nougat, raisins, and even the sours of cranberries. Upon a second sniff I have some sweet red apples, figs, a dutch currant-bun and some walnut-oil. |

An oily entry and great mouth feel. But the cask strength of batch 7 is stronger then it's predecessors. Immediately have some syrupy bitters, walnuts, spices, some tannines (winey influences) and even a sour touch (the cranberries that are combing back?). The bitters transform into sweets and the wood-tones start to build. After a few sips I get a combo of coffee, ginger, and cinnamon (with a hint of mandarin). |
